15 YEARS OF FSC PRINT

December 9, 2024

Whitehall Printing is celebrating 15 years of using FSCⓇ-certified papers as standard across it’s operation.  The family run printers was one of the first in the South West to become a certified part of the ‘chain of custody’ – a transparent system of sourcing paper from sustainably managed forests. The Bristol-based producer of brochures, books and business print actively promotes the qualities of renewable paper and print.

“The annual Festival of Sustainable Business is a great example of the city coming together to learn and support each other in positive change. We attended again in 2024 to remind marketeers that paper has an excellent life-cycle and is the world’s most recycled material. Sadly we can not yet say that about electronic communications.”

The independent family business was founded in 1977 and handed down a generation to brothers Adam and Joe Bendon in 2007. The brothers were keen to make the environment a priority and sought out FSC certification when awareness was relatively low. Marketing Manager Lucy explains;

“Back then a lot of people thought that paper came from rainforests – which of course is a myth – so we had a huge education piece to explain that new forests had been planted for pulp, thereby increasing the number of trees on our planet, rather than reducing them”.

The city of Bristol won Green Capital of Europe in 2015 and has held some of the highest recycling rates in the UK*. The city was also named Britain’s Greenest City in a 2024 recent study**. Director Joe says local clients have embraced the opportunity to know where their papers come from;

“Bristol has a vibrant creative green city so renewing our FSCⓇ  licence each year has been essential to supporting our clients’ sustainability goals, and being a relevant supplier. Our clients are very eco-conscious and want to feel confidence in the origin of their products.”

The firm are also audited each year for the stringent international accreditation, ISO 14001 {2016} which looks at business operations as whole with a view to minimising waste and increasing recycling. In 2022 the printers achieved Carbon Neutral status and introduced electric vehicle delivery.
